Carl Stilwell AKA CaLokie

A LOVE SONNET TO CAPITALI$M

How can they call a corporation a person?

We are told like a good neighbor, they are there.

But when they steal, they’re never thrown into prison.

They’re not blamed for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

The driving force of capitalism is its quest for accumulation,

Nature has no value until resources are transformed to commodities.

The amassing of ever greater wealth is the motivation.

The market’s invisible hand promises an ever-growing prosperity.

Capital applauds enterprise of the top one percent.

Claims the fortune of a few benefits everyone

but ignores the plight of those losing employment.

For mercy from Mammon, the poor can expect none.

Without my wealth, you have no work says employer.

Without my labor, you have no wealth replies worker.*

* The concluding couplet in this English sonnet is also an

Antithetic Parallelism which in Hebrew poetry is where

the second line uses a contrasting thought to the first line t

o enhance the point.
